Cricket: Symonds calls it quits
Australian Andrew Symonds has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, effective immediately.
The 36-year-old has not represented his country since 2009 but had played for Surrey and the Mumbai Indians in the Twenty20 format since.
But with the upcoming birth of his first child, the enigmatic Symonds – who still had a year to run on his contract with Mumbai in the Indian Premier League – has decided to call it a day.
“Effective immediately, I am retiring from all forms of professional cricket,” Symonds said.
“It is with regret that I will not be able to fulfil my final year of the IPL with the Mumbai Indians.”
“Mumbai Indians and the IPL have both been very supportive of me, but the impending arrival of my first child is a priority.”
Symonds played 26 Tests, 198 one-day internationals and 14 Twenty20 matches for Australia throughout his career.
