NEW YORK — Alex Rodriguez will meet with representatives of Major League Baseball at an undisclosed location in Baltimore on Friday, a baseball source said, to discuss the third baseman’s alleged involvement in high-stakes poker games that took place in 2009.
The source said commissioner Bud Selig will not be at the meeting. Rodriguez and the New York Yankees will open a five-game series with the Orioles on Friday night.
According to a person familiar with the proceedings, Rodriguez’s attorney, Jay Reisinger, will be present at the meeting.
Rodriguez could face anything from a reprimand to a suspension, as an MLB source told ESPNNewYork.com earlier this month.
But a source in Rodriguez’s camp said A-Rod is not anticipating anything so drastic. “We’re not expecting much, but who knows?” said the source.
In a recent article, Star Magazine said Rodriguez had engaged in high-stakes poker games in Beverly Hills in 2009. MLB had warned him about his poker playing in the past although it’s not clear if the games themselves were even illegal since the house might not have taken a commission.
Last week in Minneapolis, Rodriguez called the allegation “unfair and inaccurate” and said he “looked forward” to meeting with baseball officials to discuss the matter.
